FactSheet on the National Trade Data Bank (NTDB)
The National Trade Data Bank is a U.S. Department of Commerce service which
selects the best international trade and economic information available, and
provides it monthly on Compact Disc--Read-Only Memory (CD-ROM). The NTDB
CD-ROM can be used on any IBM-compatible personal computer with at least 640K
of free base memory and an ISO 9660 (standard) CD-ROM reader. The NTDB
contains over 100,000 documents of current information from 17 U.S. Federal
Government agencies.
Examples of the information available on the NTDB includes: The CIA World
Factbook, The U.S. Industrial Outlook, Business America, Merchandise Trade
Statistics by Country and Commodity, Market Research Reports, Background Notes,
National Income and Product Accounts, Foreign Spot Exchange Rates, State of
Origin of Exports, Export Licensing Information and the Foreign Traders Index.
The NTDB assures that its information is current by updating many information
programs each month, but makes access simple by providing the entire data bank
on each CD-ROM. While back issues of the CD-ROMs are necessary to access
"aged" information, only the newest CD-ROM is needed to access the entire data
bank in its most current form. "Time Series", such as in the Gross National
Products accounts, are available for as much as 20 years back on each current
disc.
Information is found and extracted from the National Trade Data Bank through
two user-friendly software packages supplied on each month's CD-ROM. The first
package, BROWSE, was created exclusively for the National Trade Data Bank and
is an extremely efficient and easy-to-use program. It allows persons with
virtually no knowledge of Federal data to explore and access the entire NTDB.
BROWSE is structured as a series of pyramids which provide the user a guide
from the most general information through a series of choices to the most
specific program or section of program identified. As a user "browses" through
broad categories (SOURCE, TOPIC, PROGRAM, SUBJECT, or TITLE) and identifies
information on a specific category, the computer produces a new, more detailed
list of choices from which the user selects. Generally, four to five
selections bring a user from the most broad to the most detailed information
available on any particular subject.
It is also possible to establish searches for information based on identifying
characteristics of the sought-after information. For example, one identifying
characteristic in the Foreign Traders Index is the size of the organization
(SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE). BROWSE searches use simple Boolean indicators (AND,
OR, NOT) and can be set to search in a variety of combinations.
The second software package on the disc, ROMWARE(TM), allows a user to search
for very specific information. A user can establish a search across the entire
databank for a particular attribute or even word and save it for use at a later
date. ROMWARE requires a basic knowledge of the data being searched and is
intended for the more advanced user.
Both BROWSE and ROMWARE provide help and information that is in context
throughout the programs. The INFORMATION screens give a background of the data
contained in each program and some background information on the agency where
the data originated. The HELP screens provide instructions on the functions of
the software package being used.
The NTDB data can be viewed on-screen or, using BROWSE, "exported" for use with
standard word processing or spreadsheet packages. The data can then be used to
supplement reports and create charts or graphs for presentations. NTDB
information is not protected by copyright and may be used, republished or
resold by anyone.

The National Trade Data Bank is available as an annual subscription (12
double-disc monthly issues) for $360 or a single month's issue (two discs) for
$35 each. Back issues of the NTDB CD-ROM are also available for $35 each.
